Where Are The Gentlemen? Sitting Comfortably..

WANTED: Gentlemen.

It was a long line of standing women at the bus. I failed to catch the image of an old lady standing in the front of the line.

I know some men would cry foul or unfair about this photo. It is not discrimination nor condemnation. Admit it or not, there are now few “respectful” Filipino guys left in the country. And we salute those who remain as “maginoo.”

I heard some defending themselves on not giving their seat to elderly, pregnant women or young ladies – they pay the same fare.

When I was 8-months pregnant, I gave my seat to an old woman with bulky bags with her. I cannot bear seeing her in that difficult situation, and the fact that the bus was full of passengers.  She refused my offer but I insisted. And the guys, especially young men, just looked and then ignored us.

None in any provisions of the Constitution nor Revised Penal Code and other laws in the country stated that every man must be gentleman. We were just raised in a culture where men give high respect to women and elderly.

I agree with you. Gentlemen today are, sadly, a dying breed. I give up my bus seat for old ladies and those with children while the men simply stare, or worse, act as if they aren’t aware. I remember one instance where I had already given up my seat for a pregnant woman. Then an old lady with a kid rode the bus soon after. Since none of the “machos” were standing up, I shouted at the guy seated closest to the old lady if it’s possible that he give up his seat and be a gentleman. He complied but gave me the evil eye first. I just smiled at him the whole time until he got off his stop. Never regretted that decision ever. =D

This is a sad fact of today’s world. I will continue to give up my seat for the elderly and the pregnant, although I am a woman myself. Maybe men are becoming narcissistic? It’s ALL about them?
