Real Estate: The Career Move for You

When thinking about a new career, perhaps the world of real estate has entered your mind. If the idea of making your own schedule, meeting new and interesting people and helping them find their dream home sounds appealing, then becoming a real estate agent may be your calling.

Like many other professions, there are a few steps required before you can begin work. Here are some tips on how to get a real estate license and start your new journey.

The Starting Steps

To become a real estate agent in any state, there are three minimum requirements to start the process.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet the minimum age requirement.

If you checked all these boxes, you can now think about the next steps.

The Degree You Need

Every state has a Division of Real Estate that monitors institutions that offer licensing programs to future real estate agents. Before applying to any program, check with your state’s division to see which colleges or courses are currently accredited. Once a program is chosen, you will need to successfully complete education in real estate principles and law to receive a certificate of completion. Each state has different requirements, so you will need to check with your state to see how many education hours are required.

You may be able to take your course at a local community college or real estate school, or even online through an accredited program. Pick a program that works for you, but also look at reviews from students. You want to be well prepared to take the licensing exam because the certificate you receive from your coursework is merely a step toward that. With this new certificate, you can take the state licensing exam as your final step to becoming a licensed agent.

The Licensing Application

You’ve hit the minimum requirements, completed all your courses and passed your licensing exam. Congratulations! Now, it’s time to file an application for a license with your state. The application process can differ depending on your state of residency, but generally, the process will involve a fee and usually include a background check with fingerprinting.

Once the state approves your application, you are on your way to developing into the realtor of your dreams! With a little research and dedication, you can set yourself on the path to becoming a renowned real estate agent in no time.
