How To Select Your Student Housing

Choosing where to live when you go to college can be a tough decision, because it has a drastic effect on your school and social life. There are several things to consider when choosing the right student housing at Clemson University. Weigh the pros and cons of each to decide which will be the best choice for you.

Cost

One of the most important housing factors for many students is the cost. Some students who go to a local college can continue to live at home while attending school, so there’s no need to pay for housing whatsoever. However, most people must find somewhere to live near the school. Dorms usually come with a meal plan and can be less expensive than an apartment; however, if you find enough roommates to share your apartment, you may actually save money by living off campus. Take a look around the area to see what’s available—most major colleges have nearby apartments that are designed with students (and students’ budgets) in mind.

Convenience

Living in dorms on campus is definitely the most convenient way to go if you want to be able to roll out of bed and go to class. The further you live from campus, the more effort it will take to get there, especially for those early-morning classes. However, some apartments are close enough that you can still walk to class without much effort. Still, they tend to be less convenient than dorms because they require more work on your part. Living in a dorm, you don’t have to worry about paying rent and utility bills—these will be included as part of your tuition. However, many people find that they’ll tolerate the monthly bills and a longer drive to class if it means a little more freedom in their housing selection.

Amenities

Finally, look at the amenities each dorm or apartment has to offer when selecting your student housing at Clemson University. Most campuses have fully equipped gyms, entertainment areas, and Internet access for all your needs. However, many apartments also come with these features. Visit a few different apartments in the area to see what each one offers. Be sure to find out exactly what utilities and services are included in your rent before you sign a lease.
