The Importance of Educating Your Children About the Weather: What to do When They Hear a Weather Alarm

Severe weather can be scary no matter what age you are. However, it is critical that you spend time educating your children about the weather in your area and what they can expect.

By taking time to talk with your children or learning about weather in schools, they can be better prepared on how to handle the situation when the weather alarm goes off. Here are a few steps in helping your child be prepared for the weather.

Learn the Weather Patterns of Your Area

One way to help your children is to learn the weather patterns your area typically sees. Do you live in an area prone to tornadoes or strong thunderstorms? Start by discussing these types of storms, what could happen and also what to expect when they do come. Consider working with your children’s teacher to create an outdoor weather station for school activities to help all the neighborhood children learn about the weather and what they should expect.

Prepare Them for the Sounds

When a weather alarm goes off, it can be quite scary. Your animals, children, and yourself may have a moment of panic, to begin with. Consider practicing drills so that when the alarm does sound, your entire family knows exactly what to do and where to go. Designate a safe place in the home for all types of weather conditions and do drills each month.
