Metro Manila Paralyzed By Heavy Rainfall And A Call For Help

It has been several days now of relentless rains. But today was different.

There are now more than 800,000 people in Metro Manila and Northern and Central Luzon affected and displaced by the heavy rainfall and flooding. Nine has already died, according to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The National Capital Region was paralyzed by floods, half of the region were submerged by floodwater. Several dams, Ipo, La Mesa, Ambuklao, Binga and San Roque are currently releasing water which already flooded the municipalities within its vicinity.

It was like the Ondoy typhoon. No, it’s worst than Ondoy although the residents of Metro Manila are now more vigilant but still in panic because of the apparently “would-never-end” rainfall.

There is no typhoon, only southwest monsoon rains. But the effects were so devastating for many. As of writing, the rain won’t stop. The latest advisory from Pagasa:

RED WARNING SIGNAL:
Issued at: 06:30 PM, 07 August 2012 (Tuesday)
Target Areas: Metro Manila
Torrential rainfall (34.5mm/hr) was observed over Pasay while Heavy to Intense rainfall (7.5-25.0mm/hr) was observed over the rest of Metro Manila for the past 3 hours.
Due to the effect of the series of thunderstorms embedded in the Southwest Monsoon flow, expect Heavy to Intense (10-25.0mm/hr) rains with occasional to frequent Torrential (more than 30.0mm/hr) rains within 3 hrs.
Residents in flood/landslides risk areas are advised to take precautionary measures and WATCH OUT for the next warning.

Many local government units has already announced the suspension of classes for tomorrow, August 8 ( all levels, public and private).

Region 3: Pampanga

Region 4A: Laguna, Cavite, Rodriguez, Rizal, Cainta, Rizal
Classes in Binangonan, Rizal were suspended at the pre-school to high school levels only in public and private schools.
